Holiday Movie Night

Daniel Prasol, teacher at FCTS, took on a new and unique extra-curricula course this year called "Event Planning". This course teaches, and requires, students to research, plan and create various events. Students have learned the complexities of timing, planning, cost outlays, marketing, teamwork and organizing.

Holiday Movie Night was an idea generated by the students in the course. The goal was to plan a family friendly Christmas movie event, complete with Santa, pictures, food and drink. Preparation, setup and cleanup were all components of the student responsibilities as course participants. This course participation requires a good number of after school hours to create these community events.

Along the way, the students discovered a lot about the required licensing for viewing of commercial movies - something most people only gaze at when the familiar "FBI Warning" appears before a movie begins. The licenses are not free, so students needed to analyze potential revenues to cover the licensing fees. Students also analyzed the audience demographics that they were trying to attract. A child welcoming atmosphere became the obvious theme, so before long, Santa was recruited for a brief visit - in spite of his hectic schedule this time of year. Festive decorations were gathered and arranged, and of course - food for the hungry movie goers.

Outside, students setup a tree with bright lights and some familiar ornaments of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Inside, movie goers were greeted by a pretty tree and Santa, the man himself!

Prior to the 6:00 PM movie start, students were setting up the concession area. Movie goers could purchase candy, soda, popcorn, yummy cookies and even hamburgers

Pictured are students who took on the responsibility to greet customers and handle money transactions. As 6:00 drew near, customers began to arrive. Ages ranged from children to adult - just what the students planned on.

Holiday Movie Night was a great success. Students are learning a lot about business, planning, social skills, research and profit in this unique course. A big thanks to Santa and Jake Bezio who made the night a really fun time for all.

Proceeds of the evening will go to the Class of 2010. A big thank you to Dan Prasol, Events Planning teacher, Helen Woznakawicz, Culinary Arts Instructor and class advisor, the evening maintenance staff and all the hard working students.

Movies shown were ELF, The Grinch and Christmas Vacation.
